The Advanced Life Support (ALS): Maternal Cardiac Arrest Module is a self-directed online learning programme designed for healthcare professionals involved in the recognition and management of cardiac arrest during pregnancy.

Maternal cardiac arrest is a rare but life-threatening emergency that presents unique challenges for healthcare teams. The course explores the causes of maternal cardiac arrest, the physiological changes associated with pregnancy, modifications to standard resuscitation procedures and strategies for managing maternal cardiac arrest.

The module uses adaptive learning technology, allowing participants to study at their own pace.

Course Learning Objectives

After successfully completing this course, participants should be able to:

• Identify current factors influencing maternal morbidity and mortality in relation to maternal cardiac arrest.
• Describe how to determine a differential diagnosis for maternal cardiac arrest.
• Describe the relevant physiological changes of pregnancy that impact the resuscitation of the mother and foetus during maternal cardiac arrest.
• Discuss modifications required in maternal resuscitation protocols.
• Describe the key components of the management approach to cardiopulmonary arrest during pregnancy.
• Discuss strategies for continuing resuscitation when initial interventions are unsuccessful in achieving return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC).

The module offers the following continuing education recognition:

• Physicians: Up to 0.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
• Nurses: 0.75 ANCC contact hours.
• Paramedics/EMS: 0.75 CAPCE Advanced CE hours.
• Physician Associates: Up to 0.50 Category I hours through AAPA credit acceptance.
• Nurse Practitioners: AANP accepts qualifying AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

Accreditation period: 19 October 2025 – 18 October 2028.

This is a self-directed online learning module. No separate practical skills assessment is required. Completion does not award an ACLS Provider eCard.

Recognition towards professional CPD requirements in Ireland or the UK is subject to the relevant professional body's requirements.
